A new report reveals Google's Android is on nearly half of the handsets carried by the U.S.'s 101 million smartphone subscribers, while about another third use iPhones.

In the data released by comScore, Android took up a 48.6 percent of the market share for U.S. smartphone subscribers for the quarter ending in January, a gain of 2.3 points since the previous quarter ending in October. Apple was a not too distant second with 29.5 percent of the market share, while Research in Motion continues its descent with 15.2 percent (down two points).

A recent Pew study shows that Americans are getting more and more comfortable with smartphones, with nearly half of respondents saying they owned one.

The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and also found Samsung continuing its status as the top handset manufacturer overall, with about a quarter of the market share amongst the 234 million Americans (ages 13 and older) who use mobile devices.

LG had about 20 percent of that big pot, while Motorola held steady at about 13 percent. Apple's iPhone made some gains, to be nearly equal with Motorola.
