Here is a simple and easy to follow guide on rooting the Droid without have to worry about bricking your device. It works on both Android 2.0 and 2.0.1 updates.

Step 1 (Recommended): Update to the latest Android 2.0.1 OTA (over the air) software update.

Step 2: Download the file for Android 2.0.1 Droid-superuser update

Please Login HERE or Register HERE to see this link!

Step 3: Rename the that you downloaded in Step 2 to update.zip (windows 7 and vista users do not add the .zip to the end of the file)

Step 4: Connect your device to your PC via USB, mount your sdcard

Step 5: Move it to the SD Card on your phone.

Step 6: Power off the DROID and power back on while holding the X key.

Step 7: When you see a "/!\" symbol, press both vol+ and camera.

Step 8: Now simply follow the onscreen menu to install update.zip file.

Step 9: Reboot your Droid phone.

That’s it! You should now be able to run "su" from your adb shell.

Or you can run "su" from Terminal Emulator, which is downloadable from the Market.

ok now this may be a stupid question but when i click download it gives me the option to open or save. I clicked open like i always did for bb and it said the file was corrupted. am i supposed to just click save and then change the name and drag to the sd card?

Yes, save the file. Rename, then drag to root of sd card. ;)

btw, here is one you don't have to rename

When you run the update.zip you wont lose your data or apps. Also, if you are signed in with your Google acct all your data and apps should automatically be backed up.

You will not lose anything and the good thing is once you get all set, you can do nandroid back ups of all your data, settings, apps etc. :)

When you are rooted and trying to do a nandroid back up, all you have to do is power off your phone...then hold x, press power, as soon as Motorola logo shows up, release power, but keep holding x....SP recovery mode will open up. There is no need to do volume up, etc. Once you are there, just select back up/restore, then advanced nandroid back up...and select all in the list (boot, cache, data, system, etc) and select perform back up. You can also name your back up. :)

Here is a completely friendly guide on How to do a FULL Nandroid Back up. :)

What I believe you should do is try and re-root. I have heard of bad roots. Try re-root then attempt the nandroid back up. :)

Okay...I used these: http://www.mydroidwo...ndly-guide.html
1. is it odd/possible that everthing else seems okay?
2. would you recommend /deleting and redownloading the update file -- I do recall seeing that same error (E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command ) at the end of the root?

thank you

Yes, delete your update.zip and redownload. Then follow steps. Also, remember to NOT unzip the file. :)

**Also, I posted a link which may be a little easier to follow in my post above. ;)

I've seen that error everytime I go into the stock recovery partition. I don't think it's anything to worry about, at all.

You will still get OTA notification but if you go thru with it, you will lose the root. I will wait to install 2.1 until it gets rooted. I love using custom roms and overclocking....love them too much to give up for 2.1. Also this update will br nice, but a slimmed down version. ;)

If youre rooted you dont want to do the 2.1 update. It will leave you unrooted waiting for someone to root the new release. My guess is though you wont have to wait long.

Alright, I have a problem haha. I downloaded the file, renamed it to update.zip and such. But when I power off, then on to recovery mode with the /!\ ... I press the Volume Up button along with the camera button on my Droid and I can't access the menu itself :(. Idk why, I have tried holding it but everyone says to just press them both at the same time and it's not working for me. Any help? Thanks

(I've been up for hours trying different methods on rooting my Droid. I'm running 2.1 btw.)
