Ok newbie here, did all the root things and the phone seems to be working, but I am unable to get the maps to install from the Market, when I try to run the fix, I get stuck on the
adb rm /systgem/app/maps.apk with the message that the file is read-only file system...

Any help is appreciated

Looks like it worked, following instructions from The terminal emulation post above. Thanks

Oh I know that this isnt the thread, but I tried to overclock, but for some reason that doesnt seem to take as the phone still get listed as 600 MHZ max when I run the overclock app.
Any help on that is appreciated as well

Thanks in advance

Glad the emulator commands worked for you!

What are you using as your overclock app? You need to first install an overclock kernel, and then go into the app (I use setCPU) to get your overclock. In setCPU, you need to be sure and enable "autodetect". I also have "auto-refresh" and "set on boot" selected in my setup.

I got it working, seems it just needed for me to take a break from it ;-) Im using SetCPU btw.

Thanks

This worked great for me: (from Droid life)

1. Open Terminal Emulator and type in the follow commands:

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 dev/block/mtdblock4 system
rm system/app/Maps.apk
cd system/bin
sh pm uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps
cd ..
cd ..
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 dev/block/mtdblock4 system
sync

2. You can now attempt to install the Google Maps update.

3. If it fails the first time, just cancel the download and try again. If it fails again, reboot and try.

4. Done!

Thanks that worked great for me! Didn't even have to reboot, worked first try.
Cheers!

I can't uninstall maps, or any preloaded apps for that matter.

i registered just to say that nothing worked for me, except this

adb.exe root
adb.exe remount
adb.exe shell rm /system/app/Maps.apk
adb.exe uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps

Thanks

Thank you. I too registered just to say this is also the only thing that worked for me. Tried everything else, but this exact method by putting in the .exe in the commands is the only way it got Maps removed. Afterwards, Installed from the Market perfectly.

Using adb

** Make sure android sdk is installed properly - How To: adb for Windows the Easy Way
** Make sure phone has USB debugging on.

Plug phone to USB
Open command prompt
Type this (DO NOT TYPE adb shell unless noted):

adb kill-server
adb root
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Maps.apk
adb uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps

If you get a not found error after you type the first one in, then the sdk/tools is not in the windows path correctly. Double check the sdk and that the path is correct.

You should now be able to install Maps from the Market.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My maps has returned. It worked flawlessly.

To manually fix Maps, modify packages.xml, removing the section that starts with:

<shared-user name="com.google.android.apps.maps"

After you've taken that out, reboot your phone and then install Maps from the Market. If you get a Login Failed message, join Latitude. It will prompt you to authorize the app. Do that, and then you can un-join Latitude by selecting Privacy options and opting out.

To modify Packages.xml, do this:

adb root
adb remount
adb pull /data/system/packages.xml
(edit packages.xml, which is now in your working directory, with a text editor, removing the section described above)
adb push packages.xml /data/system/packages.xml
adb reboot

then install Maps from the Market

I am attempting to follow these instructions for a rooted Droid running Froyo FRG83.
When I enter the command "adb root" I get the following message

"adbd cannot run as root in production builds"

I'd appreciate some help.
