This sucks, especially for all unrooted users...The following was found on Motorola's Twitter page @MotoMobile:

Oh well, I wish there'd be some news on the state of the 2.1 update for the Eris. :(

To be honest, I WAS anxious for 2.1 for awhile..... Until I realized it would likely mess up all of my customizations and hacks that I have applied. Right now, i'm running my Droid at 1.1GHz; I seriously doubt i'd be able to do that for awhile on 2.1 anyways. And after playing with the Nexus One's hacked ROM for the Droid for awhile, considering I use GDE for my home screen app; I don't see much advantage. Until 2.1 specific apps start coming out. My Smoked Glass ROM with the 1.1GHz kernel applied and running the Hero GDE theme with the cube animation is awesome for me. After all, i'm an ex-BB Storm user. Android 1.0 would be a MASSIVE improvement over that *LOL*
It seems like in the Android world, once you start getting into heavy OS mods, you tend to notice that the custom ROMs generally aren't based on the very latest revision of Android, since it takes time to develop these hacks and compile them all into a ROM. And sometimes, it's better to run a more established OS.... (take it from me, as an IT pro i've seen 'latest and greatest' syndrome bite people a lot - back in 2001, when we upgraded from 98SE to XP compatibility issues bit us quite a lot) NOW, that we've got 1.1GHz Droid hacks and all of this cool stuff, though, it's time for some cool apps to take advantage of it. In general usage, 1.1GHz only feels marginally faster than 550MHz. It seems like the main difference is in file I/O, things open faster. Even high-end games like Iron Sight feel the same, which is to say glass smooth. I guess the 550MHz CPU is already pushing the graphics chip to its limits. It SHOULD, however, be theoretically possible to record video at higher bit rates now - and be able to turn on high bit-rate stereo recording. I'll have to mess with my build.prop and see if my video recorder force closes or not. #5 OFFLINEPosted 28 January 2010 - 07:32 PM
