It was asked a couple times, I didn't see a firm answer...
SBF back pre install - then install the zip, but bootstrap was mentioned.
So do I SBF, then root, then install?

Otherwise, how are you guys installing the zip file? I have pretty much always been rooted, so I don't remember if you can install a zip from stock recovery console.

Thanks in advance, I am hesitant to update without a firm answer.
Nick

I believe you do need to re-root (+unlock the bootloader & load CWmodRecovery), then you can apply the ZIP. That's what ended up working for me, anyway!

there's a lot not firm about this. like the fact that I'm still bootlooping the 2.3.20 stock sbf and can't get into recovery. I know we all sign our phones away when we modify it like this but there should be some kind of warning with this file. I have a job interview that i can't get a hold of because i don't have a phone right now. Yes its all my own fault, blah blah blah, but really what the hell is going on that nobody knew this could happen? this is bad guys. how do i get into recovery to wipe and try the rsd lite again? i've tried flashing it 4 times to 2.3.20 and nothing changes.

the problem isn't with the recovery on the new rooted gingerbread rom's recovery. the problem for me is that I can't get into recovering after flashing the original 2.3.20 sbf with rsdlite. it just keeps bootlooping. i can get to the stock recovery and bootloader, but nothing i've tried will get me into clockwork to wipe the cache/data/whatever. this totally sucks bro... anything I'm missing here?

exact same issue..... its crazy

there is no option to wipe! i was on the first not rooted gingerbread leak and then i booted into bootloader, flashed the sbf to go back to 2.3.20 and now it's bootlooping from there. no custom recovery, nothing... i don't what to try next. i'm at a loss.

No, I'm not giving instructions.. just saying after flashing this rooted gb people won't have the kernel that was meant for it.

hmm.. maybe I jumped to conclusions.. looks like there is a boot.img in there. my bad.

Hey Guys.
This process worked for me....

FIRST GET THE D2 ROOTED GB.ZIP FILE ON TO THE SD CARD.

1. I was on the stock gingerbread for droid 2.

2. I SBF'ed the phone to stock Froyo(2.3.20).If bootlooping after SBF.
a. Battery pull.
b. Hold X and hit the power button, after rebooting. U will see a small triangle with an exclamation mark.
c. Hit the search button on keyboard. U will see the recovery menu.
d. wipe data/cache.
e. reboot.
3. Activate the phone. And root it with Z4 root. Install Koush's Bootstrap.

4. Get into bootstrap recovery mode with the koush's bootstrap.

5. Wipe data/cache. Mount system and data.

6. Select zip from sd card(the rooted GB.zip)

7.Flash.

First startup will be atleast 5 mins.

IF BOOTLOOPS then step 2.a to 2.e.

Hope this helps.

edit: i am running the gingerbread that was leaked a few days ago and need to flash the original SBF, however i cannot get the phone to show up in RSD Lite, does it need to be in a special mode?

Helped alot so far, had bootloop after sbf and it was showing my Rubix boot screen too, I refreshed and saw your post.
So far, now booting fine into stock sbf'd file.

Hopefully smooth from here. This isn't my first rodeo, but I have found the D2 to be brickier than the D1 was, so have to be sure.

Micro23 - I've been in recovery before, yesterday in fact :). But it isn't working now ... not a good sign!
(I get the "!" and Little Green Andy, by hitting the power buttons (at the same time) does nothing ... I still see !Andy.)

Hoping maybe there is another method of getting into recovery, that might work?

*** Wait - I hit some random keys (or maybe it was a timing thing), and eventually got into recovery ... get an error that says "/cache/recovery/command" ... wiping now. Let's see what happens!
*** OK, Phone booted properly, got into the phone activations, etc. screens. Now rebooting to apply the rooted.zip ... one step closer!

*** Oh, wait - I need to re-root the phone - right? Can't rename this to update.zip as it fails validation. So, now off to root Froyo ... again :).
*** ReRooted ... continuing ...
*** Unlocked bootloader, loaded CWrecovery ... rebooted into CWrecovery ... applying .zip now (and crossing fingers!)

Done & done!
*** After the above "fun", applied the zip and did a bunch of app restores, and I am up and running! This took a lot longer than anticipated!

i had the same issue as you but it is still boot looping.... native recovery and wiped and rebooted, still cycling through boot loop...

Ah, so it is the search key. I was mashing random buttons and got in ... aside from that detail, mine is all better now as well! Good Times!

I was on Rubix and I booted into recovery, wiped data/cache, dalvik cache, battery stats, then flashed this file. Reboot took awhile, but everything went fine for me. It also flashes a new radio image. Just a FYI.

Did you do a full wipe? If so, and still failing - ouch. Once I did the wipe I was all in ...

Just the Froyo sbf file (non rooted)
I have pulled battery twice and rebooted, maybe I will try an uninstall and reinstall of z4.

I have never had an issue with rooting with z4 and kinda too lazy to do it the harder ways right now.

On a side note, anyone using Jrummy's overclock app and kernels?
I would think they are not compatible, but I lilke the app for other reasons as well. I would just be tempted to flash a kernel and give it the college try.
