Please note that any modification of phone voids warranty, therefore perform at own risk.


For most custom ROMs, developers will give you an option to install using Nandroid or update.zip. Depending on ROM, some developers will have you wipe the device before loading the new custom ROM and others will just have you load "boot" and "system" thus preventing your loss of data. The following instructions are GENERIC and if there are any deviations, please check each specific ROM for additional steps required.

Prerequisites

First, make sure you familiarize yourself with the following:

• Android Debug Bridge
  
• Unix Commands
  
• USB Debugging
  
• USB Debugging Drivers
  
• MicroSD Mounting

Then...

• Root Your Droid
  
• Set up Custom Recovery Image
  
• Perform Full System Nandroid Backup

To Load a Custom ROM Using Update.zip:

• ALWAYS DO A FULL NANDROID BACK UP FIRST (Update.zip will not erase your data, but just to be safe)
  
• Check ROM specific installation instructions as well
  
• You can upgrade from any rooted ROM that is same base as the custom ROM is (ie 2.0.1 over 2.0.1; 2.1 over 2.1)
  
• Be sure to have signed into your Google account before installing
  
• Update all of your apps before installing (if available)
  
• Download desired ROM update.zip
  
• Place update.zip on the root of SD card
  
• Reboot into recovery (Power off phone, then hold X and press power, release power, but keep holding X until menu comes up)
  
• Select Install
  
• Select Allow update.zip installation
  
• Select Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)

The process will start and may take a few minutes. Wait until you see "Done" on the screen, then press Power twice and select "Reboot System Now." Once the phone boots back on, your ROM should be successfully loaded. Enjoy!!!

Is it done when the screen says "Install from sdcard complete" The status bar is not complete or moving.

Welcome to MyDroidWorld!!! It sure is done...there was a bug with that. So, you can just do power to go back and reboot. ;)

every time i try this it tells me that instalation was blocked and aborted. any advice?

i was trying to install an update .zip from the p3droid overclock kernals page. im running 2.2 now, but havnt made any other changes.

did you check allow update.zip first ?
also make sure its not named update.zip.zip .... that happen in vista I think

yeah, i click allow update.zip at which point the screen kind of blinks, but does nothing else. then i select install update.zip (deprecated)
now this time it tells me no such file or directory, installation aborted even though i know dang well its there. the yellow bar seems to show some pregress though, but then stops.
what now?

maybe i was adding an extra .zip , what a noooooob i am. jeez. anyways, i installed the update but set cpu still shows a max of 600. ill try to reboot and refresh a few times to see if that helps

after you open setcpu > hit menu > device selection > auto detect > should be good after that

i tried that and it kept going to 600. i setup the profiles which allow for 1200. seems to be running crazy fast now. so, now that i have this lighting fast phone, what the heck should i put on it?!
