Do you have it turned on (airplane mode is off) in Settings>Wireless & Networks

Welcome to MyDroidWorld vertigoelectric! Sorry you are having difficulties. Lets see if we can get you going.

1st lets make sure you have everything
SBF file from OP
Drivers from OP
RSDlite from OP

If you have those boot your device into bootloader (power off, press D pad and while holding power on device)
Connect Droid to PC via usb
Launch RSDlit
Select the SBF file from the dropdown menu
Start
Let it finish, it may fail it may not, either way the device will reboot on its own.

Once we get back to 2.0.1 we will continue to root

Thanks for the fast response. I have done this probably 10 or more times.

At this point I have my phone showing that it is running version 2.0.1, build ESD56. RSD Lite had told me it failed, yet my phone rebooted and it appears to have downgraded successfully. However, it always does this, and rooting still never works.

What shall I do next?

EDIT: Now when I try combining the files (signed-voles-ESE81-from-ESD56.fa406da6.zip and droid-ESE81-update2.zip) I get a filesize a bit larger than I did before, and when trying to apply update.zip through the recovery it won't even install it.

I'm getting increasingly frustrated by the minute.

Thanks for the response. My family and in-laws are out in the livingroom probably waiting for me to come join them for lunch... and i'm sitting in here frustrated and irritated about my phone... I hope that update.zip file works.

Well, it installed okay, and when the phone started there is a new icon in the app tray called "Superuser Permissions". Opening that icon does nothing but present me with blank, black screen (with the notification bar and the title "Superuser Permissions".

I downloaded the Telnet application and was unable to connect to localhost.

Another thing is that I have already had the phone bug me about updating a handful of times, and I'd really like to not have it do that.

What is the Superuser Permissions icon supposed to do?

superusernija will be blank, it will only display when an app accesses the root using su. So that is normal. You will also want to install a recovery image for loading custom roms and kernels. The easiest one to obtain is through ROM Manager which you can get through the market and then flash clockmork recovery through rom manager.

Very good. Thank you. This is what I am doing now. The progress bar across the top indicates I'm.... making progress.

I guess I can go get a ROM now... people are sayin Cyan is good... what is recommended?

I keep seeing something about doing a Nandroid backup. How do I do that?

You will load the clockwork the first time and it will probably fail, but dont worry just load it again and it will take. Yes, CyanogenMod is a great rom and you can download right from rom manager. You can do backups as well from rom manager. Nandroid backups are usually from an alternative recovery named sprecovery and none fo the roms in ROM manager will load using it. Only some are still using it though. If you want to use sprecovery you can through rom manager too. At the bottom of the app is that choice. Its all up to you, we will be here to help out if you need it.

Thank you. I found the Cyan rom through the rom manager and I am downloading it now. It appears as though everything is on track and running smoothly. I hope all goes well from here on out. Thank you very much!

Geez... I've been waiting for forever to download the ROM through 3g and it's been so slow, and I accidentally cleared/stopped it a couple of times, too. I turned on WiFi and it just did it in less than two minutes.

EDIT: Bad news. I used Rom Manager to download CyanogenMod. It initialized some download, then said it needed to reboot to recovery console in order to finish. It did just that, and displayed lots of technical stuff on the screen for a while (kinda like when you manually install an update). Then when it tried to reboot it remained in an endless boot loop between the word "DROID" animation and the red eye.

EDIT2: in the recovery console, i chose to wipe all user data. when i did that, it booted okay. Looks like the cyan install worked! i guess i can start reinstalling my apps and stuff now, yes?

sorry for the late reply. When you installed cyanogen rom did you check also to install the gapps (google apps) if not nothing will install from your google account. including maps, gmail...etc
When you go to install ROMs I always mark to wipe data and cache. for future reference. Hope that helps

I am new to the world of rooting but have been doing as much reading as I can to learn everything. I followed these instructions to revert back to 2.0.1 and it seems to work however in RSD under progress it states 100% but under result it says FAIL. My phone does reset at the end and starts back up and look under phone info it says my firmware version is 2.0.1 so I guess it worked correctly? Can someone confirm this? I dowloaded another file from a different thread that is supposed to work with version 2.1 but also root it at the same time. When I run update file from SD card which is this file I mentioned that is supposed to upgrade firmware to version 2.1 and also root the phone I get the SU icon on my phone. Does that mean the phone is rooted?

Thanks crackman. I am having some issues with overclocking the phone and am hoping that you can help. So I did all of the above and I downloaded ROM Manager from the app store as well as Set CPU. When I use set CPU after installing it the program works fine and lets me manipulate the speed between 25000 and 55000 mhz. When I install a kernel that I downloaded from another one of these threads to make the phone run at 1.1 ghz it all goes crazy. Set CPU says I am not running in root and wont let me manipulate the CPU speed. I am in the process of starting over and installing a new kernel maybe just at 1.0 ghz to see if that is the problem. Do you have any suggestions as to what could be going wrong? Do I need to install a new ROM before I install any kernels? Do you have any good links for reliable kernels and ROMS? Also what do I gain by installing a new ROM? Will that replace the whole look of the phone? Is that how people get that clock on the home page and are able to have the cool screen savers running in the backgroud? Thanks again for all your help and insight. This NOOB is very grateful and eager to learn.

Welcome to MyDroidWorld!!!!

Try downloading one of overclock kernels from ROM Manager. There are some by p3droid and bekit. Then use SetCPU to modify. :)

Thanks olta. That worked like a charm. I also tried downloading a ROM through ROM manager from CyanogenMod but when I did that the phone was stuck at the boot up screen and just kept doing that. Can you recommend a new ROM too? What is the benefit of installing a new ROM? Does it come with other cool features or what?

How can I get the clock featured in this theme. What about being able to write that message about if the phone is found call so and so?
